Care Guidance
A Berling piece is made to be carried every day and kept for years. Shell cordovan and French goatskin were chosen for how they age, and both require very little attention. The guidance below is enough to preserve the surface, shape and fit of the piece.
01 · Daily Care
Most days, a soft cloth or a clean, soft horsehair brush is all the surface needs. A few light passes lift away dust and revive the polish.
If the leather looks dry or dull, work in a small amount of neutral cream formulated for shell cordovan and buff gently. Avoid harsh cleaners, saddle soap and over-conditioning, which can mute the sheen over time.
The goatskin lining takes a soft, dry cloth only, and nothing more.
02 · Use and Storage
When it is not in your pocket, give the piece a clean, dry place out of direct light. Prolonged sunlight, heat or humidity can alter the finish. Keep it clear of abrasive company, keys, coins and crowded bags.
The card holder is made for three cards in total, with folded notes in the central pocket. Keeping within that capacity preserves the tension of the slots.
If the piece becomes damp, let it dry naturally at room temperature, away from direct heat. Once fully dry, buff lightly with a soft cloth or brush.
03 · Patina
Shell cordovan develops with use. Handling brings up its polish, and the color deepens where the piece is touched most often. Light marks often soften with gentle brushing and handling, settling into the patina.
Protect the surface from ink, alcohol-based hand sanitizers, denim dye and cosmetics, which can leave lasting marks. The gradual changes brought by daily carry are hallmarks, not flaws.
